Job Accountabilities

Reporting to Warehouse/Logistics Manager, the Lead Material Handler is a senior subject matter expert in the area, responsible for operation and troubleshooting of Logistics processes in addition to driving tactical scheduling and decision making. The Lead Material Handler serves the following critical functions on the Logistics team:

  • Collaborates with other team members to meet quality and delivery commitments.
  • Guides lesser experienced employees through detailed logistics sequences and troubleshooting activities.
  • Performs training and develop training plans for Logistics personnel.
  • Owns day to day tactical scheduling and decision making in the Warehouse area and prepares purchase requisitions for operating supplies/tools as needed.
  • The Lead Material Handler drives continuous improvement activities and maintains the highest standards for workplace safety and quality.

 

The Responsibilities

Specific deliverables associated with this opportunity include:

 

Safety - Demonstrates strong safety awareness and sets example for operators.

  • Ensures that all operators on the team receive required safety training and remain current on reoccurring requirements.
  • Ensures good area housekeeping.
  • Assists with Job Safety Analysis.

 

Improvements to Operations

  • Works with others to develop new ideas.
  • Encourages others to communicate their suggestions.
  • Systematically, works with others to remove barriers that affect productivity.
  • Effectively communicates with their team about changes to procedures.

  • Runs equipment along with Operators.
  • Effectively works with other Leads, Material Handlers and support groups to manage bottlenecks and Process / Equipment issues.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency (e.g., GED).  Preference will be given for candidates with a high school diploma from a technical school, or with an emphasis on technical prep coursework. 
  • Must possess a minimum of 5+ years related work experience in high-volume manufacturing, with a preference for experience in Shipping / Receiving and general warehouse function.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as you will be working in a team environment that is very data-driven.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, team environment.
  • Basic computer skills are required including familiarity with windows-based programs such as Microsoft productivity tools (e.g., Excel, Word). Additional preference given for familiarity with manufacturing or ERP systems and data entry and/or collection from such systems.
  • A working knowledge of warehouse equipment and manufacturing safety procedures is required (e.g., lock-out / tag-out, electrical / high-voltage, chemical, reading SDS, incident response procedures).
  • Prior experience with the operation of such equipment and performance of basic PM's is preferred.
  • Familiar with standard shipping programs such as FedEx shipping system
  • Hazmat Certified preferred 
  • Knowledge of Truck Bill of Landing preparation, truck routing, Export Documentation, Class Codes, Claims.
  • Must demonstrate and ability to conduct data collection and measurement activities utilizing standard and metric systems.
  • Strong desire to bring best practices to the team, share your knowledge and expertise and enable your team members' mutual success as the organization continues to grow.
  • Attendance is a critical function of this position.

 

Additional Requirements – Must be able to:

  • Perform tasks (that may be repetitive) that require reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, kneeling, walking, stooping and/or bending.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and be physically able to perform some repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to work an 8-12 hour shift while standing for much of the time.  Night shift could be either FHN or BHN
  • Work in an environment that generates OSHA permissible machine noise levels.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Climb and descend stairs or step stools.
  • May be required to alternate schedules to meet production goals.
