Job Accountabilities

About the Position

 The Commodity Manager is responsible for the development and deployment of the category strategies. This will involve directing and managing category strategies through steering Cross Functional Teams (CFT) of Product Management, Quality, R&D, Logistics, Production and Procurement, including such activities as supervising contract management for all related categories, managing organization and supplier expectations through the supplier management process, building a world class supplier base, promoting globally-competitive regions and supplier-development processes, providing leadership guidance both to the CFT team and organization, setting SMART goals, and working across regions with peers to find the best solutions.


  • Responsible for best “Terms and Conditions” based on Total Cost of Ownership approach.
  • Develop world class global category strategies, supplier base and technologies.
  • Complete market analysis of the responsible commodity areas of focus.
  • Develop and deliver negotiation plans and strategies with suppliers culminating in formal offer reviews.
  • Work closely with Supplier Development/Quality/Engineering/Product Marketing to drive cost-out programs for supply chain; not only by commercial activities, but also through value analysis workshops, Lean Management, and SixSigma.
  • Ensure complete legal compliance through internal tax and accounting audits as per local and international requirements.
  • Gather appropriate benchmarking material to drive continuous performance improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:


The successful candidate will possess the following combination of experience, knowledge, and skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics/Finance, Industrial Engineering or Law from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience plus a minimum of five (5) years of commodity management experience. Preference given to candidates with an MBA.
  • Proven Commodity Management/Strategic Sourcing experience in a high volume manufacturing environment
  • This position requires self-motivation in analytical and problem solving skills, which include knowledge of supply chain and commodities strategies and solutions.
  • This position requires effective management abilities for understanding and organizing processes, services and materials toward effective outcomes.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in successfully deploying category strategies and driving cost-out through disciplined project management.
  • This position requires absolute adherence to SolarWorld’s professional and ethical standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven track record of collaborating across departments, including different levels within and outside of the organization to achieve business objectives.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills, including the ability to effectively articulate a message to decision makers at a variety of levels
  • Effectively manage time and multiple projects simultaneously without compromising on quality.
  • Must possess advanced computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office productivity tools (e.g. Excel, Power Point, Word, Access, Project).
  • Must be able to work independently as well as thrive in a dynamic, open-office team environment. 
  • Some travel may be required, up to 15%.
  • Attendance is a required function of this position.
