Job Accountabilities


About the Position

Reporting to the Equipment Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Technician Specialist (MTS) provides support to equipment engineers in the introduction, maintenance and development of equipment for manufacturing silicon wafers and solar cells. Under the direction of designated engineer(s), assumes ownership of particular equipment, sub-systems or processes, within one to three areas of expertise. Works with production and maintenance personnel. Manages specific projects and coordinates cross-functional activities with vendors, engineers, facilities, IT department. The MTS will spend approximately 60 - 70% of the time in the fab working with the equipment, and spend the remaining time completing equipment enhancement project research, and documentation.


Primary responsibilities for this position include the following:

  • Monitors equipment and/or process performance, within and beyond existing production metrics with focus on improved equipment performance via improved maintenance procedures, systems, or capabilities.
  • Executes tests and experiments under guidance of Maintenance Manager or via matrix alignment to engineering. Analyzes data and makes recommendations.
  • Develops maintenance procedures, maintenance schedule and instructions within company systems, format and guidelines. Trains maintenance personnel and/or operations personnel performing maintenance on proper execution and verifies compliance.
  • Drafts simple to complex components for fabrication by a machine shop.
  • Assists maintenance personnel in advanced technical troubleshooting.Will be responsible for training existing and new-hire Maintenance Technicians on specialty toolsets.
  • Maintains and searches equipment logs and production databases, consolidates data for reporting equipment and/or maintenance data – scheduled DT, unscheduled DT, Green to Green, spares levels, spares spends,  other.
  • Under guidance of Maintanance Manager or via matrix relationship with engineers, develops, tests and implements design changes to continuously improve performance and reliability of machines. Drafts and dimensions simple to complex components for fabrication by machine shop.
  • Optimizes product flow and line efficiency by improving manual tools, work methods and station ergonomics, using the 5-S methodology.
  • Execute safety protocols and procedures based on SolarWorld Health, Safety and Environmental Policy.
  • Communicates with production supervisors and personnel to gather data, coordinate maintenance daily activities, and training.
  • Maintains own log of activities. Summarizes actions and future plans.
  • May be responsible for focused technical support (equipment/maintenance) of Cell toolset groups (including installations and qualification process)
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements


The successful candidate will possess the following combination of experience, knowledge, and skills:

  • Minimum education of an Associate’s degree in Science, Technology or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Additional preference will be given for Solar Manufacturing Emphasis or coursework (or related Microelectronics manufacturing coursework).
  • Must possess a minimum of 6+ years related maintenance work experience in high-volume manufacturing, with a preference for experience in solar, semiconductor or related technologies. 
  • Experience in high-tech, high-volume field desirable, such as semiconductor, PCB assembly, bio-medical devices, automotive components, high-speed packaging.
  • Advanced knowledge of one or more of the following equipment and/or production processes is desirable:
    • Schmid In Line / Rena Batch systems
    • Centrotherm PECVD / AMAT Aton CVD / Solaris CVD systems
    • Asys Printline / JRT Printline / CTS systems
    • J&R Load, Unload and TRA systems
  • Demonstrated, in-depth understanding of electro-mechanical machines, automation, process tools.
  • Hands-on experience in running, maintaining and modifying tools, as well as machine shop and power tools. Proven experience drafting/dimensioning simple to complex components for fabrication by a machine shop.
  • Capable of interpreting mechanical, electrical, and other logical schematics.
  • Knowledge of problem solving methodologies and lean manufacturing concepts is required for entry into this level.
  • Strong math skills for yield/scrap reporting and other data analysis. Experience with Statistical Process Control.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. 
  • Able to work multiple/modified shifts (CWW, days, and/or nights) with extended overtime to meet business needs.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal).  Proven ability to work well with production personnel of all levels supervisory.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment and manufacturing safety procedures is required (e.g., lock-out / tag-out, electrical / high-voltage, chemical, reading MSDS, incident response procedures).
  • Attendance is a required function of this position.


Additional Requirements – Must be able to:

  • Work a 12 hour compressed work week shift. Back half days, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and alternating Saturdays. 6:30 am - 6:30 pm BHD
  • Stand or sit for long periods.
  • Perform tasks (that may be repetitive) that require reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, kneeling, walking, stooping and/or bending.
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds (50 pounds for Module Manufacturing).
  • Work in an environment that generates OSHA permissible machine noise levels.
  • Work inside a clean room environment.
  • Use tools that require fine hand skills.
  • Visually, observe and differentiate small moving parts.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Climb and descend stairs or step stools.
  • Operate ladders (Maintenance Technicians Only).
  • May be required to alternate schedules to meet production goals.
