    Job Accountabilities


    About the Position

    In this critical position your focus will be on implementing and optimizing highly automated, manufacturing processes and tools, which will greatly increase our capacity for end-to-end integrated solar photovoltaic manufacturing in the United States.  In this high impact position you will directly support the Module factory in Hillsboro, OR. 


    Primary responsibilities for this position include:

    • Plan, design, and implement robotic automation systems for high-speed, high-volume, automated and semi-automated production of solar modules or cells.
    • Improve and maintain existing process automation. Drive and execute improvements in the areas of safety, quality, reliability, and speed.
    • Working closely with Maintenance and Production personnel to support efforts, which will improve the performance of manufacturing systems, e.g. addressing process or equipment problems
    • Troubleshoot robot malfunctions, using knowledge of programmable controllers, electronics, circuit analysis, mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics.
    • Troubleshoot, repair, problem-solve, and maintain electrical control problems for all manufacturing equipment.
    • Perform and drive safe behaviors in all tasks and areas. Initiate and drive safety improvements in the methods, machines, processes and areas.
    • Establish work instructions and procedures for minor and major equipment maintenance tasks.
    • Initiate investigations and corrective actions to problems with rigorous problem solving (Cause and Effect, Root Cause Analysis) methodology.
    • Program robot for series of manipulator (arm-hand) moves (movements) manually or by electronic instructions to a microprocessor or by setting up and adjusting sequence by hand-held teach pendant.
    • Defining processes for staff (incl. Training of technicians as well as follow-up verification), materials, equipment (including cycle times), operations and MES.
    • Create, Sustain and Improve assembly automation functionality according to expansion plans.
    • Work cooperatively, cross-functionally and independently to achieve project goals.
    • Understand financial impact of specific decisions including BoM's and ERP capability.
    • Keep up-to -date with automation technology developments, new trends, applications, equipment and suppliers.  Apply knowledge to promote continuous improvement of Operations function.
    • Review equipment effectiveness (OEE) data to define and execute continuous improvement activities to improve overall equipment capability.
    • Establish equipment benchmarks/comparisons.

    • A minimum of a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline (or equivalent work experience) is required.  Advance degree preferred. 
    • Must have 8+ years experience in a similar engineering role which involves planning, designing, and implementing fully integrated robotic and automation manufacturing systems for high-volume, 24/7, assembly or semi-conductor production environments.
    • Must have 5+ years recent experience writing new programs for PLCs and soft-PLC controls along with hardware & software development, digital/analog IO, interface to motion controller, TCP/IP interface or MES communication (previous hands on experience with Siemens Step 7 desired)
    • Must have 5+ years experience integrating and programming robotics (I.E. 5-6 axis, floor mount, gantry, REIS, FANUC, etc) into new or existing production sites.
    • Extensive knowledge and experience in CAD, AutoCAD or similar software.
    • Thorough understanding of vibration, fluid flow, product handling, part transfer, fixturing, process tooling, pneumatics, cam devices, stepper/servo motors, drive systems, slide systems, sensor technologies and applications, and machine control systems.
    • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills.
    • Ability to correlate automation problems with material, personnel, equipment, process changes, DoE/Stat/Six Sigma, etc., data & trend analysis.
    • Familiarity with Six Sigma, LEAN manufacturing or other vigorous quality control programs is desirable.
    • Must be able to travel to other SolarWorld sites domestically and internationally, as required, for knowledge transfer and problem solving. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid passport. Travel will be substantial in the beginning with extended visits to SolarWorld's other module production facilities.
    • Ability to wear necessary personal protection equipment (PPE).
    • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as you will be working in a team environment that is very data-driven.
    • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
